Forty wineries are scheduled to pour at wine in the pines 2009.

Some of the wineries joining us for the first time this year are...

Adelaida Cellars (www.adelaidacellars.com)

Adelaida's wines begin at the roots, pushing through the rocky limestone soils on the west side of Paso Robles on California's Central Coast. The winery, which originated in 1981, is located 14 miles east of the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 1,800 feet in the Santa Lucia mountain chain. The winery is a vineyard driven operation that considers itself a foremost proponent of the potential of west side Paso Robles. Adelaida's wild and rugged mountainside vineyards are loaded with limestone and calcareous shale. According to winemaker Terry Culton, "these characteristics cause the vines to strengthen. This results in added stress on the vines, which lowers the yields but produces more intensely flavored fruit". In keeping with the winery's sustainable philosophy, the vineyards are not tilled, encouraging native grasses, wild sage and rosemary to flourish between the rows. Adelaida produces from its own Estate vineyards and a select group of contracted vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. Amongst its holdings are the two principal estate properties, Viking Vineyard and HMR Vineyard. The mighty Viking Vineyard was planted in 1992 and is now producing great Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The historic HMR Vineyard was pioneered by Dr. Stanley Hoffman in the early 60s. Devoted care and substantial investment have returned these 40+ year old vineyards to their former glory. Intense, high quality wines are convincing first-time tasters and experts alike.

Enjoy!

Eberle’s pioneering spirit didn’t stop there. In 1980, Gary co-founded the Paso Robles Appellation and in 1983, Gary opened the doors to his own Eberly Winery with the premiere of Eberle’s 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Eberle handcrafts 25,000 cases of wine each year from surrounding Estate vineyards and, after more than 25 years since the release of the Eberle label, the winery consistently remains one of the highest award-winning wineries in the United States.

Their first vintage, made under the thoughtful guidance of their friend John Alban (Alban Vineyards), yielded 87 cases of Edna Valley-designated Syrah. In the year 2000, they decided to make a full-time commitment to Hug Cellars and to their future as proprietors of a small, family-owned winery. Since that time, they have devoted themselves entirely to this soulful endeavor.

Schalchlin carefully chooses the right vineyards for his expressive, handcrafted wines just as he thoughtfully chooses the beautiful wood engraved art that adorns his labels and gives his wines a distinct look to match their fine quality. Curt Schalchlin and his new Sans Liege wines clearly deserve a place at the table.

Riverbench Winery (www.riverbenchwinery.com)

Riverbench Vineyard was established in 1973, when its first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes were planted on the property. For years since then, some of the most renowned wineries in Santa Barbara County have purchased their fruit for their own wines. Over time Riverbench has become a prominent name for high quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Santa Maria Valley. In 2004, a group of local families purchased the property. Wine drinkers themselves, the owners quickly became enamored with the wine industry and decided to start producing their own wine label using small quantities of their exceptional fruit. Riverbench Winery was born. The first vintage included both Estate and Reserve versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since then, their portfolio has increased to include new interpretations of these noble varietals. All Riverbench wines are made in limited quantities, and many are available exclusively through their tasting room on Foxen Canyon Drive.

The 39-acre vineyard stretches across a sun-drenched mesa on the eastern portion of their 106-acre property. They started planting in 1983 and now have 33,000 vines. Buttonwood's varietal mix of sauvignon blanc, semillon, marsanne, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and syrah reflects the preferences of owners Betty Williams and her son-in-law, Bret Davenport, for Bordeaux and Rhone style wines that grow perfectly in their warm, eastern Santa Ynez Valley location. The winery was completed in time for the crush of 1989 and they now produce 8,000 cases of wine a year and have a great time doing it.

Byron Winery & Vineyard (www.byronwines.com)

The winery was founded in 1984 by winemaker Ken Brown. Byron is nationally recognized for its high quality Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Byron's growing regions produce excellent Chardonnay that is vibrant, bright and aromatic, with a complex fragrance and a luscious creaminess. The long growing season in the Santa Maria Valley allows Pinot Noir grapes to develop slowly and to their fullest producing undertones of cherry and plum. In March 2001, Jonathan Nagy joined Byron as assistant winemaker. A few years later, he became Byron’s head winemaker. Describing Santa Maria Valley as one of California's top regions for Pinot Noir, Jonathan devotes a great deal of time exploring and understanding the interplay between the vineyards and winemaking practices.

Toretti Family Vineyard (formerly Casa Torres Vineyard) (www.torettisfamilyvineyard.com)

Bob "Pappy" Torres owned a restaurant chain and raised cattle most of his life. He started growing Pinot Noir and Syrah on his ranch and is now a full time wine maker. Located thirteen miles from the Pacific Ocean, the Toretti Family Vineyard sits six hundred feet above sea level. Throughout the night, a blanket of thick fog protects this delicate grape as the Pinot Noir patiently awaits the warm afternoon sun. Hot days are held at bay as the ocean breeze whispers across the Santa Maria Valley hills, cooling the fruit. This climate results in a light bodied wine with additional complexity that is a pleasure to drink. The original vines were planted in May 2000 on five acres. The wines are fruit forward as the grapes are crushed at full ripeness to maximize the berry flavors.

Chumeia Winery (www.chumeiavineyards.com)

For Chumeia Vineyards Winemaker, Lee Nesbitt, it started with a change in direction that grew into a passion. For Winery partner Eric Danninger, it all started on a beach in Maui, drinking a 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon that his good friend had created. Lee and Eric met through their wives, Kristen and Jennifer, who had known each other since they were knee-high. It was on that fateful vacation, Lee and Kris shared their dream of building a winery and producing an even better Cabernet than what Eric and Jen had in their glass. In 1999, Chumeia Vineyards was formed with the purchase of 20 acres of land eight miles east of the Central Coast city of Paso Robles, California. Lee Nesbitt's dream of building a winery was coming to fruition.

Consilience Winery (www.consiliencewines.com)

Consilience was founded in 1999 when after years of planning the aspirations of two couples became a small reality. There of course is a long story, but the short of it began when winemaker Brett Escalera, his wife Monica, and Tom and Jodie Daughters all met back in 1990 with many common values and interests. Wine and the lifestyle surrounding it were of particular interest and after years of planning, education and good old fashioned perseverance Consilence started with a small production of 1997 Syrah from Santa Barbara County. The wines are all crafted in small enough production to allow careful handcrafting with attention to capturing the grape's identity and maintaining a very high quality from wine to wine. While loosely focused on Rhone varietals, Consilience also produces other wines such as
Pinot Noir and Zinfandel out of genuine interest, and will add others as the very best fruit becomes available.

Costa De Oro Winery (www.costadeorowinery.com)

Domaine Alfred (www.domainealfred.com)

Domaine Alfred’s 1998 inaugural vintage was from specially selected clones of classic varietals in the historic Chamisal Vineyar that was painstakingly replanted in 1996. Returning to the founding objective to create the best Chardonnay possible, the Wente clone of Chardonnay that had initially been planted was re-introduced early in the process. Domaine Alfred planted experimental plots of Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Gris over the next decade, producing successful and delicious results. Chamisal Vineyard is the heart, t only of Domaine Alfred, but of Edna Valley. First planted in 1973, it was the first vineyard of the region and remains the premier producer of graceful Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The vineyard, centered on property that was an early Spanish land grant, is named for the original title, “place of the chemise,” a native scrub plant. Fortunately, both chemise and wine vines thrive in the poor soils and cool climate that is so similar to Burgundy.

Io Wine (www.iowines.com)

Inspired by his admiration for Rhone Style wines Io was introduced by Byron's former winemaker Ken Brown. Io now features three wines under the Io label, Io classic, Ryan Road Syrah and an Upper Bench Syrah. Io's dark fruit character is reminiscent of the great Northern Rhone red wines, but its harmonious marriage of several varieties reflects the artful blending of the Southern Rhone. Flavors are ripe and well-focused with hints of dark cherry and earthiness framed by a firm structure and smooth, mature tannins. Plush and supple, the texture carries through to a long, velvety finish -- a sign of even greater complexities to come with additional bottle age.

Lane uses the best Pinot grapes available in Santa Barbara Co. working with Julia's Vineyard and Bien Nacido Vineyard fruit as well as the new, Melville Vineyard. Tobin James Cellars (www.tobinjames.com)

It all started with an extra six tons of grapes that a winery could not accept and process. Tobin (Toby) James, an assistant winemaker at the time, asked the owner of the winery if he could have the grapes and make wine out of them for himself. The owner replied, "sure kid, knock yourself out". A year and a half later, gold medals began pouring in for Toby's first Zinfandel, the 1985 "Blue Moon" Zin. After making his wines at another local winery for a few years, and tasting and selling them out of a local wine shop in town, Toby finally took the plunge and built Tobin James Cellars in 1994. In the Tobin James tasting room on Highway 46 in Paso Robles, award winning wines are poured from behind the grand, antique 1860's Brunswick mahogany bar from Blue Eye, Missouri.

Vista Del Rey Vineyards

In Spanish, Vista Del Rey means "King's View." An apt title for owner Dave King. The Vista Del Rey Vineyards Zinfandel grapes produce grapes with rich, wild berry-like flavors, possessing moderate, soft tannins. Barbera is the second most widely planted red wine grape in the Vista Del Rey Vineyards. The vigorous vine is a late ripener, with the grapes having the potential to produce deep purple, high acid wines with mouth-filling plum and berry fruit flavors and a bone-dry finish. Sangiovese, the third varietal, is the most widely planted grape in Italy and is the principal grape in the fabled Chianti. Vista Del Rey's well-drained clay calcareous soil and warm to hot growing season provide ideal conditions for this hardy varietal. It yields well-balanced wines with good structure.

York Mountain (www.yorkmountainwinery.com)

In 1882, apple farmer, Andrew York, discovered the perfect soil and climate for growing grapes and the York Mountain Winery was born. The winery was sold to winemaker Max Goldman in 1970 who continued the family winemaking tradition until the landmark was purchased by David and Mary Weyrich in 2001. The soil conditions are so unique that the York Mountain appellation is one of the smallest recognized in the state of California. The sun is always shining brightly while the breeze gently brings in the cool coastal air. This unique combination of cool climate and low vigor hillside soils creates wines that possess a perfumed elegance not found elsewhere.
