Some of the wineries who have joined us in the past are listed below. Check back in the coming months to see who will be coming this year.
The Addamo family originated in Sicily where they produced wine for personal use for generations. David Addamo, proprietor and grandson, moved his family to the Central Coast in 2000, planted a vineyard on 120 acres, and now produces eight varietals. Their tasting room in Orcutt, California, was voted "best" in the Valley last year. The grapes are balanced at the soil level, and hand-harvested to guarantee unsurpassed quality. The Addamo family uses the finest French Oak barrels for aging to ensure flavor complexity, and balance.
Founders of Sanford & Benedict Vineyard (1971) and Sanford Winery (1981), Thekla and Richard Sanford are proud to present wines from their new winery, Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards. With a commitment to sustainable farming and green business practices, and over 100 acres of certified organic estate vineyards, Alma Rosa offers Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir-Vin Gris (dry rosé). Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards is located in the Santa Rita Hills Appellation.
Anglim Winery is a small, family-owned label focused on producing vineyard-designate Rhone varietals with grapes from some of the finest growers in California. They realize that stellar wines begin in the vineyard, so they are passionate about sourcing the finest fruit for Anglim wines. Their limited case production of 3,000 to 4,000 cases a year allows Anglim to handcraft their wines in small lots with a combination of tradition and innovation. Anglim uses 100 percent French oak, but manage the new oak percentages to create wines with a balanced style, and enough character to be cellared but enough elegance to be enjoyed now.
Barrel 27 was born to the words "Each bottle of this wine represents a dream realized by two friends". And so it is. Mac Myers and Russell From have their own, independent labels as well, Mac's McPrice Myers Wine Company, and Russell's Herman Story Wines. Both wineries are committed to producing Rhone varietal wines, focusing on Syrah, Grenache, Viognier and Roussanne. On March 1st, Barrel 27 released its first Pinot Noir! Sourced from a single vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills, Mac and Russell crafted a classic SRH Pinot, dark, dense and powerful which still maintains its elegance and finesse. On the same day, Barrel 27 released its first reserve Syrah, the "Head Honcho"! A selection of a few of the very best barrels from Barrel 27's Central Coast Syrah with some small syrah lots from McPrice Myers Wine Co and Herman Story Wines blended together.
If you live in Pine Mountain Club you have probably enjoyed Peter Brucher's wines. Peter has a simple philosophy - obtain the best possible fruit and let it determine the production techniques to enhance the natural flavors and quality. You can enjoy Peter's Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Savignon at many fine restaurants including the Dolphin Bay Inn in Shell Beach, Rosa's, Pelican Point (Peter's favorite hang out) and the Sea Venture all in Pismo Beach ... not to mention Pine Mountain Pizza and the Pine Mountain Club lounge.
Buttonwood Farm Winery is set amidst the splendor of Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. The 39-acre vineyard stretches across a sun-drenched mesa on the eastern portion of their 106-acre property. They started planting in 1983 and now have 33,000 vines. Buttonwood's varietal mix of sauvignon blanc, semillon, marsanne, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and syrah reflects the preferences of owners Betty Williams and her son-in-law, Bret Davenport, for Bordeaux and Rhone style wines that grow perfectly in their warm, eastern Santa Ynez Valley location. The winery was completed in time for the crush of 1989 and they now produce 8,000 cases of wine a year and have a great time doing it.
The winery was founded in 1984 by winemaker Ken Brown. Byron is nationally recognized for its high quality Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Byron's growing regions produce excellent Chardonnay that is vibrant, bright and aromatic, with a complex fragrance and a luscious creaminess. The long growing season in the Santa Maria Valley allows Pinot Noir grapes to develop slowly and to their fullest producing undertones of cherry and plum.
Cambria, a private family-owned estate winery, has carved out a reputation for producing lush, tropical Chardonnay, velvety-textured Pinot Noir and rich spicy Syrah since 1987. Located in an east-west orientation on the Santa Maria mesa near the bien nacido wine growing district and close to the ocean provides excellent ingredients for fine wine making. The flagship wines are the Chardonnays from Katherine's vineyard, Julia's Pinot Noir and their Tepusquet Syrah. Enologist Michael Fay and his staff will be pouring at the festival this year.
Bob "Pappy" Torres owned a restaurant chain and raised cattle most of his life. He started growing Pinot Noir and Syrah on his ranch and is now a full time wine maker. Located thirteen miles from the Pacific Ocean, Casa Torres Vineyard sits six hundred feet above sea level. Throughout the night, a blanket of thick fog protects this delicate grape as the Pinot Noir patiently awaits the warm afternoon sun. Hot days are held at bay as the ocean breeze whispers across the Santa Maria Valley hills, cooling the fruit. This climate results in a light bodied wine with additional complexity that is a pleasure to drink. The original vines were planted in May 2000 on five acres. The wines are fruit forward as the grapes are crushed at full ripeness to maximize the berry flavors.
Winemaker Mark Hutchenreuther plans to pour 2004 Cuvee Blanc (50/50 Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc), 2004 Pink Nun Rose (90/10 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir), 2003 Cuvee Rouge (50/50 Grenache/Mourvedre), 2004 Cuvee Noir (50/50 Petit VerdotlPetite Sirah), and 2004 Purple Haze Zinfandel (75/17/8 Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah). Mark has 25 years experience as a civilian engineer working for the Navy after graduation with a BSME from Michigan Tech, first as a mechanical engineer, next as an electronics engineer, and finally as a computer engineer. Now he makes great wine.
For Chumeia Vineyards Winemaker, Lee Nesbitt, it started with a change in direction that grew into a passion. For Winery partner Eric Danninger, it all started on a beach in Maui, drinking a 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon that his good friend had created. Lee and Eric met through their wives, Kristen and Jennifer, who had known each other since they were knee-high. It was on that fateful vacation, Lee and Kris shared their dream of building a winery and producing an even better Cabernet than what Eric and Jen had in their glass. In 1999, Chumeia Vineyards was formed with the purchase of 20 acres of land eight miles east of the Central Coast city of Paso Robles, California. Lee Nesbitt's dream of building a winery was coming to fruition.
Consilience was founded in 1999 when after years of planning the aspirations of two couples became a
small reality. There of course is a long story, but the short of it began when winemaker Brett Escalera,
his wife Monica, and Tom and Jodie Daughters all met back in 1990 with many common values and
interests. Wine and the lifestyle surrounding it were of particular interest ahd after years of planning,
education and good old fashioned perseverance Consilence started with a small production of 1997
Syrah from Santa Barbara County. The wines are all crafted in small enough production to allow
careful handcrafting with attention to capturing the grape's identity and maintaining a very high quality
from wine to wine. While loosely focused on Rhone varietals, we also produce other wines such as
Pinot Noir and Zinfandel out of genuine interest, and will add others as the very best fruit becomes
available.
In 1993 Gary Burk had dinner with Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat) and Dominique Lafon of Domaine des Comtes Lafon. The rest is history, so to speak. He went to work at ABC in 1994, hired full time in 1995, and made his first barrel of wine in 1994. He now produces 4,500 cases annually. The tasting room at Highway 101 and Stowell Road in Santa Maria is open to the public.
Gary has received critical acclaim, receiving 90 point scores or higher from Robert Parker, James Laube of Wine Spectator and Wine and Spirits Magazine. He has also had wines named in the Top 100 Wines of the Year by Wines and Spirits Magazine (2000), the San Francisco Chronicle (2001), Wine Country Living (2003), and most recently Winner of Best in Show at both the Orange and Santa Barbara County Fairs.
Cottonwood Canyon Vineyard & Winery is a small ultra-premium winery specializing in Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Founded in 1988 by the Beko family, Cottonwood Canyon joins traditional Burgundian wine-making practices with American ingenuity to produce age-worthy and memorable wines. The now 78 acre estate was 15 years old and planted to 46 acres of Chardonnay. The estate was one of the original California vineyards planted in a north-south direction which allows for maximum sun exposure yet opens the vineyard to cooling Pacific breezes.
The vineyard gets cool ocean breezes throughout the day. Located in the Santa Maria Valley, just 10 minutes east of the town of Santa Maria, Cottonwood Canyon is at the northern-most edge of the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail in Santa Barbara County's Wine Country.
Under the guidance of Winemaker Chuck Carlson, Curtis Winery is exclusively committed to the crafting of Rhone-style wines. Since 1995, Curtis Winery has built a reputation for wines of quality and distinction, with an emphasis on the authentic expression of vineyard and vintage.
Curtis' wines primarily from their estate vineyards in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, with contributions from select local vineyards. Their Ambassador's Vineyard was planted in 1990 as the cornerstone of the estate. The Crossroads Vineyard followed in 1997, and is today recognized for producing one of the region's most acclaimed Syrahs. Small blocks of Grenache and Roussanne are also integral to our estate program.
Bill Wathen and Dick Dore' have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same - the creation of very small-production, vineyard-designated wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. Best known for Pinot Noirs from the Bien Nacido, Julia's and Sea Smoke Vineyards, Foxen also produces excellent Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet and a new Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend known as Foothills Reserve.
Russell From started the Herman Story label (named after Russ's Grandfather) with his 2001 vintage. Russell purchases the grapes from the best vineyards possible and makes the wines in a craftsman style often referring to winemaking as cooking with the best ingredients available. The wines of 2004 include the Larner Vineyard Syrah, Larner Vineyard Grenache and the San Luis Obispo County Syrah. Don't wait too long to try Russell's 2004 wines. The 2003 releases are sold out.
Crafted by the talented winemaking staff at the Byron Winery, Io salutes the pioneering legacy of Santa Barbara County. Inspired by his admiration for Rhone Style wines Io was introduced by Byron's former winemaker Ken Brown. Io now features three wines under the Io label, Io classic, Ryan Road Syrah and an Upper Bench Syrah. Io's dark fruit character is reminiscent of the great Northern Rhone red wines, but its harmonious marriage of several varieties reflects the artful blending of the Southern Rhone. Flavors are ripe and well-focused with hints of dark cherry and earthiness framed by a firm structure and smooth, mature tannins. Plush and supple, the texture carries through to a long, velvety finish -- a sign of even greater complexities to come with additional bottle age.
In 1981, Ken and the Volk family established Wild Horse Vineyard and constructed Wild Horse Winery. In 2003, he sold Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards to Peak Wines International. In December of 2004, Ken purchased the "Original" Byron Winery facility and renamed the property Kenneth Volk Vineyards. In 2006 the first wines were released. The primary focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley, a region long renowned for Burgundian varietals. The Santa Barbara wines come from some of the region's most acclaimed vineyards, among them, Sierra Madre, Bien Nacido, Solomon Hills, Garey Ranch, and the historic Nielsen Vineyard.
Akiri Hill, owner and winemaker at Labyrinth, has been passionate about Pinot Noir for over 20 years. He produced his first wine at home in New Zealand. In recent years he has completed 7 consecutive vintages in California. In 2000 he joined forces with Lane Tanner and the Labyrinth label was born.
We are pleased that we were able to entice Lane into joining us this year while sampling her excellent wines at the Celebration of the Harvest at Rancho Sisquoc. Lane started her own wine making company in 1984 with one client. She began making wines for the Hitching Post restaurant (A locally famous Santa Barbara Co. steak house). In 1989 she started the Lane Tanner label and her methods for Pinot production have not changed much in the last 20 years. Lane uses the best Pinot grapes available in Santa Barbara Co. working with Julia's Vineyard and Bien Nacido Vineyard fruit as well as the new, Melville Vineyard. She harvests the grapes when they taste right, not when the sugar hits a certain number. She looks for maturity and complexion but still with the sparkle of youth.

Louis is best described as an innovator and a master at utilizing a variety of growing practices and techniques. His vast knowledge and viticulture expertise span over 35 years. In 1996, Louis joined forces with retired Judge Royce Lewellen, with two of his existing vineyards, and together, they acquired several premium wine producing properties. These vineyards are located in the three principal wine grape growing regions of Santa Barbara County: the Santa Maria Valley, the Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Ynez Valley. Named in honor of Jeff Ovene's grandmother Merthel "Ovene" McConnel, Ovene Winery produces World Class Central Coast Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery opened in 1972 and is now under the direction of wine maker Alec Franks producing 10,000 cases annually. It all started with an extra six tons of grapes that a winery could not accept and process. Tobin (Toby) James, an assistant winemaker at the time, asked the owner of the winery if he could have the grapes and make wine out of them for himself. The owner replied, "sure kid, knock yourself out". A year and a half later, gold medals began pouring in for Toby's first Zinfandel, the 1985 "Blue Moon" Zin. After making his wines at another local winery for a few years, and tasting and selling them out of a local wine shop in town, Toby finally took the plunge and built Tobin James Cellars in 1994. I n the Tobin James tasting room on Highway 46 in Paso Robles, award winning wines are poured from behind the grand, antique 1860's Brunswick mahogany bar from Blue Eye, Missouri. They will also be flowing at the PMCPOA wine festival dinner on Friday, June the 8th.

In Spanish, Vista Del Rey means "King's View." An apt title for owner Dave King. The Vista Del Rey Vineyards Zinfandel grapes produce grapes with rich, wild berry-like flavors, possessing moderate, soft tannins. Barbera is the second most widely planted red wine grape in the Vista Del Rey Vineyards. The vigorous vine is a late ripener, with the grapes having the potential to produce deep purple, high acid wines with mouth-filling plum and berry fruit flavors and a bone-dry finish. Sangiovese, the third varietal, is the most widely planted grape in Italy and is the principal grape in the fabled Chianti. Vista Del Rey's well-drained clay calcareous soil and warm to hot growing season provide ideal conditions for this hardy varietal. It yields well-balanced wines with good structure.
In 20 short years, Wild Horse Winery & Vineyards has grown from its humble beginnings to take its place as one of the Central Coast's leading producers of premium varietal wines. Our success is rooted in a commitment to crafting wines that are consistently high in quality and represent a good value. Jim began making wine in the basement of their house in Northern California. Starting from scratch with kitchen utensils, strainers and trash cans they began smashing grapes. Jim won every home-wine making award possible; bronze, silver, gold and best of show. That is why Jim decided to turn professional. He made Syrah and Chardonnay from Premiere Coastal Vineyards and kept adding more blends. He now produces 4,000 cases a year.
In 1882, apple farmer, Andrew York, discovered the perfect soil and climate for growing grapes and the York Mountain Winery was born. The winery was sold to winemaker Max Goldman in 1970 who continued the family winemaking tradition until the landmark was purchased by David and Mary Weyrich in 2001. The soil conditions are so unique that the York Mountain appellation is one of the smallest recognized in the state of California. The sun is always shining brightly while the breeze gently brings in the cool coastal air. This unique combination of cool climate and low vigor hillside soils creates wines that possess a perfumed elegance not found elsewhere. You can relax with a glass of award-winning York Mountain wine surrounded by the breathtaking mountain views under the shade of the Sycamore trees. Located just 7 miles west of Highway 101 along Highway 46 West, in Templeton.
Need a break from all that fabulous wine? Spend a little time with Dan Hilker, one of Santa Maria Valleys first craft brewers of specialty beers and ales. Dan Hilker and Gary Ford, founders of SM Brew are both local boys from the Central Coast of California. Dan comes from a law enforcement background. Gary's background is somewhat sinister. He has always appeared to be retired, but rumors have circulated in times past that he may have worked undercover for the CIA. Their brews will delight your palate and will be a great change of pace at Wine in the Pines this year.
